Search Engine Submissions:
Search engines need to know that your website exists.
While there are thousands of different search engines, the top 10 engines account for over 95% of all search engine traffic!
Indeed, Google accounts for over half of this, and just three engines - Google, Yahoo and MSN - account for over 80% of all searches carried out in the UK. (Their search results are also used on other search engines and portals, such as AOL and Orange).
This means that we can ignore all but about a half a dozen different search engines - inclusion in these will ensure exposure to almost all Web users. (Submitting to 1500+ search engines via automated software is therefore pointless and can sometimes count against you, as major search engines prefer you to submit manually).
The cost of submitting your website, as well as the time period until it gets indexed, varies amongst the different search engines. Unless you pay for your site to get listed, most search engines take their time in picking up and indexing new website pages. Normally this is done within 4 to 8 weeks. The frequency with which your website gets re-visited (important if your website content changes regularly), also varies. Ideally you should therefore optimise your website BEFORE you submit it to different search engines, especially those that are free to submit to.
The table below lists the most important search engines and directories for UK website owners that you should try to submit to.
